Isotope Fractionation: Why Aren't We What We Eat?
نویسنده
چکیده
The isotopic composition of an element records information about its history. Given a fossil, it is possible to analyse the isotopic composition of the elements in the fossil and to use this to reconstruct the diet that the animal consumed. The process of dietary reconstruction, however, is far from simple. Biological systems are quite complex and can themselves introduce isotopic fractionations that may distort the dietary information. The aim of this paper is to review the concepts of isotope fractionation under steady-state conditions to provide a framework for discussion of dietary reconstruction. Among the elements of interest for dietary reconstruction, nitrogen bears a distinct role. This is because nitrogen is almost unique to protein. A secondary aim of this paper is then to review nitrogen metabolism. The final aim is to combine these in postulating a simple isotopic model of nitrogen metabolism. ? 1999 Academic Press

Quantification of isotope fractionation in experiments with deuterium-labeled substrate.
Isotope analysis is a potentially sensitive method to trace in situ degradation of organic contaminants. In a recent paper, Morasch et al. (3) investigated the mechanism of isotope fractionation during toluene biodegradation using deuteriumlabeled toluene. The authors overlooked that the Rayleigh equation that is normally used to evaluate isotope fractionation at natural abundance level (2) is ...
متن کاملShort-term measurement of carbon isotope fractionation in plants.
Combustion-based studies of the carbon-13 content of plants give only an integrated, long-term value for the isotope fractionation associated with photosynthesis. A method is described here which permits determination of this isotope fractionation in 2 to 3 hours. To accomplish this, the plant is enclosed in a glass chamber, and the quantity and isotopic content of the CO(2) remaining in the at...
متن کاملKinetic oxygen isotope effects during dissimilatory sulfate reduction: A combined theoretical and experimental approach
Kinetic isotope effects related to the breaking of chemical bonds drive sulfur isotope fractionation during dissimilatory sulfate reduction (DSR), whereas oxygen isotope fractionation duringDSR is dominated by exchange between intercellular sulfur intermediates and water. We use a simplified biochemical model for DSR to explore how a kinetic oxygen isotope effect may be expressed. We then explo...

We show a lot of respect for science today. To back up our claims, we tend to appeal to scientific methods. It seems that we all agree that these methods are effective for gaining the truth. We can ask why science has its special status as a supplier of knowledge about our external world and our bodies. Of course, one should not always trust what scientists say. Nonetheless, epistemological jus...

‘Identifying the conditions that favour successful PFM reform is a good start, but we need to understand the possibilities when not all of these conditions are present.’ Following more than a decade of intensive activity, the debate on public financial management (PFM) reform in developing and transition countries seems settled. The main elements of technical good practice are clear and the cri...
